My, my! I'm sitting here eating my Caribou Coffee bar pondering where to grab a mooseburger for lunch. I can hardly believe that Mr. McSame picked the Alaskan "MooseChick" Governor, Sarah Palin, for his running mate. Wow! At first blush, it might seem that wild women like myself might enjoy this and consider voting for the newly formed ticket. No how, no Way! As soon as you investigate this gun-totin', Moose huntin' mama, you find out she's Ultra Conservative. Pro-life and NRA lifer (an oxymoron), pro oil drilling (right into the northern nature preserves), anti-gay, extreme religious right -- the hits just keep on coming. So, forget Sarah, Plain and Tall.
What I do like is that my oddball collection of Northern Exposure videos and DVDs will increase in value. I can have a lot of fun with this, like why not download the Northern Exposure theme song to your cell phone? I might ;) (at least have a listen, it's GREAT!) Don't remember this show? Best bone up on all things Northern!
Labor Day (sic) Moose Mama Update: Thankfully the wild web stories that little Twig (or is it Trig) is Palin's baby and not her grandson were false. Her teenage daughter is pregnant. These people breed like rabbits and that's my concern with the famous Pro-Life stance. What if we all wanted 5 - 10 kids and they were all procreating as soon as their hormones allowed? The planet is too crowded now. More of us need to be as responsible with human offspring as we are with our pets. The real immorality is allowing humanity to increase exponentially when we don't have the resources to manage what we have now.
And, finally, open message to big mouth James Carvelle: Shut Up! Let them run her for VP. Wish I could play poker against you (showing your hand.) If you force her out, McSame might wise up and get a real contender. duh!

well, he had to expand his voter base with a younger person and a woman to boot. but they're all still right-wing conservatives at heart, so wrapping it all up in a pretty pink bow won't change the innards.

The SHOCKING truth... She has a Down Syndrome baby. How in the world could she assume Command (as in President of the United States) with a healthy baby, much less one with the needs and requirements of this one? Truly RECKLESS thinking on McCain's part given his age and health history. Poor judgement should be the central issue here. Obama made a wise, responsible choice for VP. McCain selects someone he's met ONCE and clearly a decision made in the heat of Convention fever. That should be the final word on the caliber of these two candidates, IMHO.

Speaking of which, did you see that wonderful video clip of that hungry looking Polar Bear appearing from nowhere and approaching the sled dog who was confined at the end of a long chain? The owners thought, uh oh, the dog's a goner! But no, the bear played with the dog, who in turn played with the bear. They hugged and licked and rolled around, the Polar Bear lay on his back while the dog climbed all over him, etc. Every day for a week that bear came back and played with his new friend.
Crypto-Cranium, eh? I like it, even as I puzzle it. It immediately made me think of the time Gore Vidal called William F. Buckley Jr. a Crypto-Nazi during the democratic convention in, I think, 1968. Buckley replied with something, which ended with the promise that he'd put "his fist in the middle of [Vidal's] goddamn face" if Vidal called him a crypto-nazi again. Now, those were the days, when men were men and live television was live television! You even got coverage of the riots in the streets, which I noticed was completely absent last week. There was some adventure on the streets though. Do a search on youtube for "DNC protests" and watch the one about the police slamming the codepink woman to the ground. It's violent and frighteningly rapid.
I like Crypto-Cranium, except in my case it wouldn't be using the hidden potential of my mind so much as clearing out the dusty rubbish and dumping it all into a written Rorschach Test.
No, I don't know much about Palin. I heard some of the basics you mentioned - Pro-lifer, NRA, hunter, pro oil... but I hadn't heard the anti-gay, though I guess it was to be expected. I didn't know about the child with Down's Syndrome, but I don't know if that makes any difference. I heard she was an effective governor and rapidly brought the state expenditure down to within budget constraints - that would certainly be a big change from the sort of republicans in the white house lately. I can only imagine which costs she cut.
I'd say there's a good chance she could become president. He's had cancer four times and might have it now. His choice doesn't completely surprise me - I mean, that he would choose someone rashly. Within the last 24 hours, I listened to a 30 min. interview with someone who was in the naval academy with him and, although they were in different years (McCain was older) lived right across the hall from him. This guy was also a POW in North Vietnam, one of the early captures, about 2.5 years before McCain's capture. He likes McCain and respects him, but he won't vote for him for president because he thinks the office is too important for personal loyalties to affect judgement and McCain has a fierce, hair trigger temper and has always been know to act rashly, without listening to advisors. He, like most of us, think McCain has changed a lot in the last couple years, to be more attractive to the extreme right.
Though I would think McCain will do as well with Palin as he would have with Mitt Romney (Lord save us!), very possibly better.
Get to know her. Unless Obama goes into high gear and McCain stumbles very badly, Palin could be Mrs. President in relatively short order. Won't that be fun?!
I look forward to a day when gender and race are irrelevant in discussions about political candidates and voters. Now back to the real world . . .

You know, since I visited this site earlier, I've learned that Palin is a staunch supporter of teaching creationism in schools.
Now, isn't that just Dandy?! I'm sure the millions anxiously awaiting the Apocalypse and the Taliban will be delighted, but sometimes I wonder how many Americans are actually leaning in that direction or how little it might take to swing them over.
Did you know that under the Nazis, university level teaching was that Mary was a Persian (Aryan) and Joseph was a German soldier of fortune. Can we see that type of thing in our future?
I enjoyed reading all of your informative and entertaining comments about the new VP candidate - makes you think about the various factors people take into consideration when voting. My comments yesterday were off point for this conversation, and more of a reaction to all the punditry surrounding race and gender in this election. I don't know about you, but I resent being neatly categorized as an "over 50 white working woman," especially when I never seem to vote the way pundits say my "group" will vote.
